Renzo Ortega, CURATOR OF THE OFF-GRID EXHIBITION will discuss the current state of painting
“There are no isms for contemporary painting, much less a technique to follow. I think the
current moment is perfect for painting because its centuries of history, conventions, and
technical innovations generate the ideal canvas for artists to develop pictorial works that
represent our current time and, at the same time, be part of the fascinating history of painting;
which is part of the social and cultural developments of nations and their people.
The Off-Grid exhibition, curated by local painter Renzo Ortega for Peel Gallery, brings
together five artists who live and work in the Triangle, North Carolina area. Whose work
presents a different approach and application of painting, from figuration to non-figuration,
from paint on canvas to site-specific installation. This exhibition represents a diverse range of
pictorial expression, empowering the medium and making the painting practice relevant and
necessary.
These exhibited artworks are a cultural contribution to the region; they demonstrate that
painting is not just making an image with paint but also transmitting personal statements. The
different and unique artistic voices represented in this exhibition, sharing the same space,
also demonstrate that coexistence between diverse people is possible, and that is something
we all want and advocate in the region.”
